Senior Associate/Research Scientist

We are seeking a Senior Associate/Research Scientist within the Air Quality Observations team. The role is suited to early-career or aspiring scientists with expertise in atmospheric chemistry and air quality measurements, and a strong interest in translating research findings to inform air quality policy.


Responsibilities


  • Design and conduct air pollution studies using reference- or research-grade gas monitors, aerosol characterisation equipment (including AMS/ACSM), and networks of lower-cost air sensors.
  • Formulate research questions and undertake data analysis to address them.
  • Develop data analysis tools and packages, as required, in collaboration with the AI/ML and Digital Applications teams.
  • Develop proposals and draft technical reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
  • Deliver lectures as part of capacity-building workshops for external stakeholders, including government officials and non-specialists.
  • Present at national and international conferences, and participate in or organise workshops.
  • Mentor junior researchers in data analysis and report writing.

 

Qualifications


PhD in Engineering or a related Science discipline, with doctoral research in air pollution, atmospheric chemistry, or a related field.

  • Senior Associate: PhD with 0–3 years of postdoctoral experience.
  • Research Scientist: PhD with a minimum of 6 years of postdoctoral experience.

  

Skill Set


  • Demonstrated experience in operating, maintaining, and applying AMS/ACSM or similar advanced instruments, and/or deploying and managing large networks of low-cost sensors to characterise urban and regional air pollution.
  • Familiarity with air quality management frameworks and practices will be an advantage.
  • Experience in proposal development and leadership of field campaigns, including managing and mentoring research staff, will be an advantage.
  • Proficiency in Python, R, or Igor Pro for data analysis and visualisation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, evidenced by peer-reviewed publications in high-quality journals and presentations at international conferences.

Senior Associate

We are seeking a Senior Associate with expertise in technical, analytical, and project implementation aspects of hard-to-abate industrial sectors and/or MSMEs, with a focus on reducing GHG and energy intensity. The role includes advancing circular economy solutions, clean fuel adoption, and the transition to renewable or electric-based thermal systems, along with performance analysis and techno-economic assessment of low-carbon pathways. The ideal candidate will have experience in modelling, research, and project execution, and will contribute to research, policy inputs, and stakeholder engagement while independently managing assignments, mentoring junior team members, and delivering high-quality outputs aligned with organisational goals.


Responsibilities


  • Lead and contribute to research on low-carbon and clean technology pathways for decarbonising energy-intensive and MSME-based industries in India.
  • Conduct techno-economic and performance assessments of clean technology solutions for industrial processes in hard-to-abate sectors, including those under the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS).
  • Develop concept notes and methodologies for offset mechanisms within the Indian and global carbon markets, including innovative ideas under IDC.   
  • Conduct detailed IN&OUT mapping of Industrial sectors (prepare the profile for product-mix, energy & emission, fuel mix, technology, stakeholders, contribution to country’s economy, including the country’s NDC commitment if any, Decarbonisation roadmap, etc.) for ODA1 countries in Asia and Africa continents, through source-driven desk-based research.
  • Lead and contribute to advanced research on near-, mid-, and long-term decarbonisation measures, such as CCUS/CCS, hydrogen, electrification, circular economy and recycling, and alternative fuels and feedstocks, across industrial sectors, including innovative financial models.
  • Develop research reports, policy briefs, journal papers, and technical publications for reputed national and international platforms.
  • Contribute to proposals, concept notes, and new project ideas aligned with emerging decarbonisation trends and national priorities.
  • Engage with government agencies, industrial associations, research institutions, and industry stakeholders for data collection, validation, and dissemination of findings.
  • Support capacity-building initiatives, training programmes, and technical workshops for sector stakeholders.
  • Mentor team members in research methodologies, modelling approaches, and technical writing.

Qualifications


Master’s degree or equivalent in chemical, petrochemical, or biochemical engineering; industrial chemistry; materials science; metallurgical, mechanical, or manufacturing engineering; or a related field.


Skills and Experience


  • Strong academic and research background, with publications in reputed journals or conferences.
  • 5–8 years of relevant experience in industrial decarbonisation across hard-to-abate sectors and/or MSMEs.
  • Experience in mapping and techno-commercial assessment of low-carbon or clean technology pathways.
  • Good understanding of industrial processes and associated energy and emission reduction measures.
  • Knowledge of the Indian carbon market (CCTS) and/or global mechanisms (e.g. CDM, Gold Standard, Verra), as well as climate policies such as EU CBAM and NDCs.
  • Familiarity with industrial energy and emission norms, compliance requirements, and sustainability reporting.
  • Experience in developing high-quality research papers and technical reports.
  • Exposure to stakeholder engagement, training delivery, or collaboration with government/academic institutions (preferred).

Intern

We are seeking an Intern to support secondary research on energy-intensive industrial sectors, with a focus on industrial decarbonisation. The role involves data collection and analysis, techno-commercial assessment of clean and emerging technologies, evaluation of manufacturing processes for energy and GHG reduction opportunities, and review of policy frameworks, compliance standards, and gaps. The Intern will also contribute to sector-level energy and emission benchmarking, analysis of India’s industrial energy/emission profile, and identification of short-, mid-, and long-term decarbonisation strategies aligned with national commitments. The role may include field surveys, stakeholder interactions, and coordination with project teams to support timely deliverables.


Responsibilities


  • Conduct source-driven secondary research on large energy-intensive and MSME sectors in India, aligned with the role overview.
  • Engage with industrial stakeholders, sectoral OEMs, and other relevant entities to collect data and gain insights.
  • Record and organise data in structured MS Excel formats.
  • Ensure completeness, consistency, and quality of collected data.
  • Assist with data cleaning, validation, and documentation.
  • Support the project team’s reporting and deliverable requirements.


Qualifications


Final-year students or recent graduates with a bachelor’s or master’s degree (or equivalent) in chemical, petrochemical, or biochemical engineering; industrial chemistry; materials science; metallurgical or electrical engineering; or a related field.

Responsibilities


  • Track and analyse developments in industrial decarbonisation (IDC) across state, national, and global contexts.
  • Work at the intersection of clean technologies and implementation strategies, identifying ways to improve decision-making and policy in industrial sectors.
  • Conduct research on IDC-related policies and regulations to generate actionable insights.
  • Develop concept notes, project ideas, and proposals aligned with sector priorities and economic impact.
  • Undertake research, modelling, and analysis to build a strong knowledge base on IDC trends, technologies, and business models.
  • Apply knowledge of low-carbon and net-zero pathways for industry, including policy frameworks, financial modelling, market assessment, energy auditing, and GHG accounting protocols.
