We are looking for a Senior Associate (Built Environment Specialist) to lead research on Karnataka’s and India’s buildings sector, with a focus on affordable housing and developing scalable low-carbon pathways. The role involves driving systemic transformation through robust scientific approaches—from on-site data collection and digital twin development to life-cycle assessments—and translating research insights into actionable policies through close engagement with government agencies, industry partners, and other stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Lead research activities, including data collection, literature reviews, and quantitative analyses, to assess energy demand, thermal comfort, and emissions in the buildings sector.
  • Develop and apply life-cycle assessment (LCA) methodologies to quantify embodied and operational carbon in building prototypes.
  • Oversee on-site performance monitoring to establish real-world energy and comfort baselines.
  • Synthesise research findings to create scalable models projecting energy use and emissions across affordable housing schemes.
  • Track emerging trends in urban and buildings sector policies, construction technologies, and sustainability standards.
  • Engage with experts, government stakeholders, contractors, and communities to co-create practical, evidence-based solutions.
  • Organise and facilitate stakeholder consultations, workshops, and roundtables to ensure research relevance and policy impact.
  • Disseminate research outcomes through technical reports, policy briefs, journal publications, and interactive dashboards.

Qualifications

Master's degree in architecture, urban planning/design, civil engineering, building science, or a related sustainability field, with 5-8 years professional experience in sustainable built environments, building performance analysis, construction materials, and/or policy research.

Skill Set

  • Hands-on experience with building energy modelling software and/or life-cycle assessment (LCA) tools, with the ability to apply these for low-carbon building design and analysis.
  • Proven experience in stakeholder engagement, fieldwork, and translating technical research into actionable insights for policy and implementation.
  • Applied understanding of the buildings sector, including construction materials, energy demand, and thermal comfort principles.
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and critical-thinking abilities, with proficiency in technical analysis such as energy modelling, LCA, or data science.
  • Experience with data analysis and scripting tools (e.g., Python, R) will be an advantage.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders across government, industry, and academia.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work both independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Familiarity with India’s urban development and affordable housing ecosystem, and awareness of relevant policies and standards.
  • Experience or interest in system dynamics, policy modelling, or on-site building performance monitoring will be beneficial.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and standard analytical tools.
  • Proficiency in spoken Kannada will be considered an asset.

Job

Analyst

We are looking for an Analyst to lead research and modelling on emission reduction in India’s thermal power sector. The role involves analysing global emission trends and evaluating international technologies and regulatory frameworks for their applicability in the Indian context. You will contribute to the development of India-specific emission reduction strategies by conducting technology feasibility assessments, abatement cost analyses, and evaluating social and environmental impacts. The position also includes designing a standardised proforma to collect and analyse plant-level emission data, supporting India’s 2030 and 2070 decarbonisation goals.

Responsibilities

  • Analyse global and national emission trends of thermal power plants and benchmark India’s performance against international standards.
  • Evaluate emission control technologies, policies, and regulatory frameworks adopted by leading countries such as China, the United States, and Russia.
  • Conduct detailed assessments of India’s thermal power sector, including emission profiles, efficiency levels, and abatement potential.
  • Develop India-specific, phased emission reduction strategies aligned with national and global climate targets.
  • Perform technology feasibility and abatement cost analyses for advanced and low-emission thermal technologies.
  • Assess the social and environmental impacts of proposed mitigation measures and recommend just transition pathways.
  • Design and implement a standardised proforma to collect, verify, and analyse plant-level emission data from public and private utilities.
  • Collaborate with government agencies, utilities, and research partners to ensure data robustness, analytical accuracy, and policy relevance.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, energy, or environmental engineering or a Master’s degree in power systems, energy policy, or sustainability (preferred), with 2–4 years of experience in power sector modelling, emission assessment, or energy policy research.

Skill Set

  • Strong understanding of thermal power plant operations, emission processes, and control technologies such as FGD, SCR, supercritical systems, and carbon capture and storage (CCS).
  • Proficiency in energy and emission modelling tools (e.g., GridPath, PyPSA, or equivalent analytical platforms).
  • Knowledge of global and national policy frameworks, including IEA Net Zero scenarios, UNFCCC methodologies, and India’s CCTS and PAT schemes.
  • Experience in data analysis, techno-economic assessment, and marginal abatement cost (MAC) modelling.
  • Ability to design standardised data-collection templates (proformas) and manage large, multi-source datasets.
  • Strong skills in policy research, benchmarking, and technical report writing for government or multilateral projects.
  • Familiarity with environmental and social impact assessments (ESIA) in the power sector.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and stakeholder coordination skills for engagement with utilities, regulators, and consultants.

Job

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on point and non-point biogenic carbon sources.
  • Assess and quantify biomass and waste carbon distribution.
  • Perform scenarios for sustainability and market assessments of feedstocks.
  • Prepare technical reports, research papers, and presentations.

Qualifications

Pursuing a Master’s degree in science or engineering (chemical, biological, renewable energy, environmental, sustainability, or a related area).

Skill Set

  • Strong understanding of carbon and biomass data collection and analysis, technology assessment, and geological mapping.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and research skills.

Duration
