Analyst/Senior Analyst

We are looking for an Analyst/Senior Analyst with an interest in atmospheric science and air quality measurements, and an aptitude for translating research findings into insights that support air quality policy. Candidates should have demonstrated experience in some of the following areas: air quality measurements using reference-grade instruments, such as beta attenuation monitors and gas analysers; analysis of air quality trends using reference-grade instruments and/or low-cost sensors; or deployment and analysis of data from large networks of low-cost sensors to characterise urban and regional air pollution. Knowledge of the principles and operation of reference-grade instruments and low-cost sensors is desirable. Familiarity with AMS/ACSM, Aethalometer, Xact, SMPS, or similar higher-end instruments will be an added advantage.


Responsibilities


  • Conduct air pollution studies using reference- or research-grade gas monitors and networks of low-cost air quality sensors.
  • Calibrate, operate, install, and maintain reference-grade instruments, including PM samplers and gas analysers, as well as low-cost sensors onsite and offsite.
  • Support and conduct fieldwork for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the existing sensor network.
  • Manage consumables and purchase requirements for air quality monitoring instruments.
  • Perform data analysis and visualisation using Python, R, or Igor Pro, and conduct routine quality assurance and quality checks of reference-grade and low-cost sensor data.
  • Guide the development of data analysis tools and packages, as needed, in collaboration with the AI and Digital Platforms team, and support the maintenance and updating of CSTEP’s air quality dashboards.
  • Contribute to report writing; Senior Analysts will also be expected to formulate research questions and contribute to the development of research outputs.
  • Participate in and organise workshops.


Qualifications and Experience


  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering or Sciences, with an interest in air pollution, atmospheric chemistry, or a related field.
  • Analyst: Bachelor’s degree with 0–3 years of experience.
  • Senior Analyst: Master’s degree with 0–3 years of experience.


Skills


  • Interest in operating and maintaining reference-grade instruments and/or large networks of low-cost air quality sensors.
  • Proficiency in Python, R, or Igor Pro for data analysis and visualisation.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, demonstrated through presentations at workshops and conferences.

Senior Associate

We are seeking a Senior Associate with expertise in atmospheric chemistry and air quality measurements, and an interest in translating research findings into insights that support air quality policy. The candidate should have experience in air quality measurements using reference-grade instruments, such as beta attenuation monitors and gas analysers; trend analysis of air quality data using reference-grade instruments and/or low-cost sensors; or deploying and analysing data from large networks of low-cost sensors to characterise urban and regional air pollution. Knowledge of the principles and operation of reference-grade instruments and low-cost sensors, and experience using AMS, ACSM, or similar higher-end instruments will be an advantage. Familiarity with air quality management will be a plus.


Responsibilities


  • Conduct air pollution studies using advanced instrumentation, reference instruments, reference- or research-grade gas monitors, and networks of low-cost air quality sensors, and analyse the resulting data.
  • Guide the development of data analysis tools and packages, as needed, in collaboration with the AI and Digital Platforms team.
  • Participate in and organise workshops, and deliver lectures as part of capacity-building programmes for external stakeholders, including government officials and non-specialists.
  • Contribute to external funding proposals and prepare reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
  • Mentor junior researchers and present research findings at workshops and conferences.


Qualifications


PhD in engineering or sciences, with doctoral research in air pollution, atmospheric chemistry, or a related field.


Skill Set


  • Expertise in operating and maintaining AMS/ACSM/similar research instruments and/or large networks of low-cost air quality sensors.
  • Proficiency in Python, R, or Igor Pro for data analysis and visualisation.

Senior Associate

For this post, we are seeking candidates with expertise in weather/chemistry transport modelling, and satellite data analysis and visualisation. The applicant must have experience working with the Weather Research and Forecasting model with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) and/or the Comprehensive Air Quality Model with Extensions (CAMx) on High-Performance Computing (HPC) platforms. She/he should also have experience working with satellite datasets (e.g. MODIS and TROPOMI) and should be proficient in high-level programming languages for data processing.


The Senior Associate will work on WRF-CAMx and/or WRF-Chem or equivalent modelling systems to perform model inter-comparison and validation using satellite/ground-based measurements, make adjustments to the model setup to improve model performance, and assist in preparing model inputs for use in reduced-complexity model(s).



Responsibilities

  •  Develop, configure, and optimise regional-scale chemical transport models (e.g. WRF-Chem and WRF-CAMx) on HPCs.
  • Analyse and validate model outputs against ground-based and satellite measurements.
  • Create data visualisations and effectively communicate findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Generate new ideas leading to project proposals and contribute to/lead project reports/journal articles/Op-Eds, etc.
  • Participate in relevant conferences and workshops, as required.



Qualifications

  • PhD in a discipline related to air pollution, atmospheric chemistry, meteorology, or equivalent.
  • Should have studied chemistry/atmospheric chemistry and meteorology as part of the Master’s degree/PhD coursework.
  • Minimum two years of research experience in WRF-Chem, CAMx and/or any chemical transport model during PhD.



Skills set

  • Experience with CTMs: Hands-on experience with WRF-Chem/WRF-CAMx, or similar CTMs.
  • Data Analysis Skills: Ability to analyse model outputs and validate them with measurement data using statistical methods
  • Programming Skills: Proficiency in Python for data analysis and visualisation, shell scripting for running models, FORTRAN to debug model code.
  • High-Performance Computing: Familiarity with Linux/Unix and running CTM simulations on HPC systems.
  • Ability to handle large volume of datasets (NetCDF, HDF, GRIB, ASCII, geo-referenced data).
  • Should have published peer-reviewed journal articles in international journals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for presenting findings, writing reports/journal articles, and contributing to proposals.
