As one of the fastest-growing economies, India’s transport demand is expected to triple by 2050, and without interventions, associated emissions could rise dramatically. Low-carbon mobility comprising electric, biofuel or hydrogen-based vehicles and efficient multimodal transport systems offers a pathway to decouple the growth from emissions. Integrating the new energy sources into transport through coherent and responsive policies not only reduces emissions but also strengthens energy security.
However, realising this opportunity requires policies that evolve along with technological advancements, market conditions, and consumer needs. India’s mobility ecosystem comprises of vehicle manufacturing, energy infrastructure, logistics, and public transport – each requiring tailored support mechanisms. Dynamic policy frameworks that are regularly updated based on evidence and feedback help maintain alignment with India’s evolving energy landscape.
Under this initiative, by being a thought leader, CSTEP aims to inform the low-carbon mobility policy evolution in India, based on systems thinking, evidence-focused research, and policy engagements.
