

This project assessed how much energy storage Maharashtra would need—and where to place it—for FY 2029–30 to reliably integrate rapidly growing solar and wind. Using capacity-expansion and production-costing models, it evaluated suitable storage technologies and siting options across the state’s transmission network to improve reliability, reduce curtailment, and lower system costs. The study delivered state-level storage requirement estimates (MW/MWh), mapped renewable-energy parcels for higher grid integration, and identified optimal locations for battery and pumped-hydro storage within the transmission network. It also compared the techno-economic performance of different storage technologies to determine least-cost, high-reliability options, and provided strategic inputs for policy and regulatory frameworks to support storage deployment and renewable integration in Maharashtra.
