Water Security and Climate Adaptation in India

Key Highlights

Water security is central to climate adaptation and resilience, especially in a country like India where water-related risks—floods, droughts, and groundwater depletion—directly impact food, energy, ecosystems, and livelihoods. This project aims to understand water security actions and policies in India using the Climate-Water-Energy-Food Nexus framework, and its interlinkages with ongoing climate risk and adaptation work.

Key Objectives

  • Map the policy and institutional ecosystem related to water, across sectors such as agriculture, WASH, energy, and disaster management.
  • Facilitate cross-sectoral linkages under the Climate–Water–Energy–Food (CWEF) framework.

Key Activities

  • Scoping: Conduct literature and framework review to identify key dimensions and gaps in India’s water sector.
  • Ecosystem Consultations: Engage stakeholders through workshops and site visits in diverse biogeographies (mountains, floodplains, coastal regions, etc.).
  • Policy and Ecosystem Mapping: Analyse national and state-level policies, and map organizations working in the water and allied sectors.

Expected Outcomes

  • Water Security Policy Brief Series drawing insights on governance, water–energy–food nexus, and climate resilience.
  • Comprehensive Water Ecosystem Overview Document mapping key actors and policy frameworks.
