Over the past decade, India has emerged as a global leader in clean energy, ranking third in solar power capacity and fourth in renewable energy (RE) installed capacity worldwide. As of July 2025, the country had achieved over 230 GW of the 500 GW RE target for 2030, with solar alone contributing 119.02 GW. This remarkable progress highlights not only technological advances but also the crucial strategies developed under the country’s visionary leadership.
Key government initiatives and their impacts
The Indian government has shown exemplary vision in renewables and crafting pathways to net-zero by 2070 using Sustainable Development Goal 7 as a strong lever. Multiple schemes have been introduced to accelerate the country’s clean energy transition. For instance, during the 4th Global Renewable Energy Investor’s Meet and Expo, the Honourable Prime Minister (PM) said, through the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY),every household in India can become a prosumer. The scheme aims to install rooftop solar in 1 crore households, offering subsidies up to INR 78,000 and enabling annual savings of INR 15,000 per family. As a result, over 15 lakh installations (or 5,700 MW of solar capacity) were completed as of August 2025.
Future pathways
Looking forward, India is expanding its RE portfolio by introducing building-integrated photovoltaics through PMSGMBY, agrivoltaics through PM-KUSUM 2.0, and large-scale battery energy storage systems. Further, the Ministry of Power’s emphasis on storage and hybridisation will guarantee a continuous supply of green energy.
