This project was a part of the Indo-US collaborative research platform Solar Energy Research Institute for India and the United States (SERIIUS; www.seriius.org) and was funded by the WIPRO Foundation.

In this study, CSTEP analysed Solar PV Micro Grids (SPVMGs) considering its potential as a promising solution for electrifying rural homes and villages in select sites in Karnataka. SPVMGs can easily facilitate local generation and distribution of power, without relying on the larger power grid.

We conducted a detailed techno-economic analysis of an SPVMG. Key aspects of the study included simulating the generation characteristics of an SPVMG, calculating battery life based on different dispatch strategies, and conducting a scenario analysis to help find a suitable or close-to-optimal system configuration. A financial model developed for the SPVMG analysis was used to evaluate the economic feasibility of technically appropriate system sizes.
