Professor Rangan Banerjee is currently the Director of IIT Delhi. He is on lien from IIT Bombay (from February 2022), where he served as the Forbes Marshall Chair Professor in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay—a department that he helped start in 2007. He has been involved in setting up a Megawattscale Solar Thermal Power Testing, Simulation, and Research Facility sponsored by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, and is the faculty advisor of Team Shunya - India’s first student team in the Solar Decathlon 2014 Europe finals.
Professor Banerjee has been a member of the TIFAC Technology Vision 2035 - Apex Committee, and Chairman of the Energy Technology Theme. He was also a Convening Lead Analyst for Industrial End Use Efficiency, and a member of the Executive Committee for Global Energy Assessment (2008-2011) coordinated by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis.
He has been the Dean (R&D) and received the Excellence in Teaching Award from IIT Bombay. A Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, Prof Banerjee is also an Adjunct Faculty (Honorary) in the Department of Engineering & Public Policy, Carnegie Mellon University.
He was a member of the Working Group on New and Renewable Energy for the Eleventh and Twelfth Five Year Plans in India, and a member of the Planning Commission's Expert Committee on Integrated Energy Policy.
Professor Banerjee is on the editorial boards of several reputed journals, including the International Journal of Sustainable Energy, International Journal of Sustainable Engineering, International Journal of Thermodynamics, Solar Energy Advances, and Global Transitions (Energy Transitions). He has also co-authored books in the area of power and energy.
At CSTEP, he is a member of the Technical Advisory Board.
