Solar Energy–Based EV Charging: A Pilot and Techno-Economic Study

India has 21 of the 30 cities with the worst air quality in the world. The transport sector is a major contributor (40%–80%) to air pollution in the cities. Hence, decarbonising the transport sector with the deployment of electric vehicles (EVs)is a crucial step in mitigating air pollution. Running an electric vehicle in the USA leads to a greater reduction in CO2 emissions than running it in India since the grid energy (used by the EV) in India is predominantly generated using coal.

Planning Tool for E-Bus Deployment

Phase II of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles (FAME) India is envisioned to introduce 7,000 e-buses across the country by 2024. This initiative has increased e-bus deployment at a rapid rate. However, the traditional bus operators are not yet familiar with the operational needs of e-buses. Unlike traditional buses that require refuelling, e-buses need frequent recharging to increase their operational range. This key difference calls for setting up the necessary electric infrastructure to meet the charging demand of e-buses.

Charging Technology Options for E-Buses in Bengaluru

Electric buses (e-buses) have caught the attention of the Indian public transport operators due to their ability to address the issues of rising greenhouse gas emissions, and air and noise pollution caused by conventional fuel buses. In order to make this a seamless transition, an efficient charging infrastructure is imperative. Currently, depot-based plug-in charging is the most common method of charging e-buses in India.

SNEHA - Malnutrition Management and Technology

The concept of SNEHA (Solution for Nutrition and Effective Health Access) was born in 2017 in the office of the Principal Secretary of the Department of Women and Child Development (DWCD) in Bengaluru, Karnataka. A differential pricing mechanism that calculates different pumping and generation prices for pumped-hydro energy storage (PHES) should be employed for its growth in India, recommends a recent study by the Center for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP).

On 29 November 2021, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) announced that the country’s total installed renewable energy (RE) capacity (including hydro) had crossed 150 gigawatts (GW), while also setting a new target of reaching 175 GW capacity of RE by 2022.

CSTEP Conducts a Capacity-Building Workshop for the Banaras Hindu University

The Centre for Air Pollution Studies (CAPS) at the Center for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP) conducted an online workshop on 1 December 2021 for the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) faculty and students. 

 

The capacity-building workshop was organised to help them understand how to collect data from line departments and carry out transportation surveys as part of CAPS's project: Developing Emission Inventory for Non-Attainment Cities in India.

 

CSTEP Signs MoU With the Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh

CSTEP signed a memorandum of understanding with the Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (APTRANSCO) on 30 November 2021. CSTEP will act as the knowledge partner to APTRANSCO in high impact research projects in Andhra Pradesh. CSTEP will try to develop least-cost pathways for the power sector in the state. CSTEP will also carry out transmission network analysis and grid balancing analysis for integrating high renewable energy in the state. 

Vision: Clean Skies for Punjab

The Centre for Air Pollution Studies (CAPS) at the Center for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP) organised a conference on 9 December 2021 in Chandigarh to discuss the effectiveness of policy measures in Punjab to reduce air pollution and outline a clear air vision for the future.
