Feasibility of Supplying Dedicated Agricultural Feeders with Solar Power in Karnataka
The agricultural sector in Karnataka accounts for 39% of the state’s electricity (~21,344 MU). This is provided for free, or at heavily subsidised rates, to farmers. Moreover, electricity is not metered. This has led to an estimated revenue loss of INR 9,295 crore for state DISCOMs. The Government has attempted several initiatives to reduce this loss, one of them being segregation of domestic and agricultural feeders.
Using AI to Achieve Development Goals
The developmental challenges faced by India are too big to be solved by the conventional linear approach. Artificial intelligence (AI) is seen as the next disruptive technology. The increase in computation power and development of innovative algorithms have made possible hitherto unthinkable applications such as self-driving cars and humanoid robots - as well as daily life applications such as the predictive prompt of search engines, and purchase recommendations provided by e-commerce sites.
Studies for the Government of Karnataka
1. Sustainable Urban Planning Strategies for Cities in Karnataka
Source Apportionment Study for the City of Bengaluru
CSTEP has initiated a source apportionment (SA) study for Bengaluru as per the request of the Government of Karnataka.
The main goal of the study is to provide evidence towards creating a Clean Air Action Plan for Bengaluru and implementing strategies for improving air quality.
Breathe Easy: To Avoid a Repeat of New Delhi 2017, Look at the Small Picture
It is obvious that we cannot continue in a business-as-usual scenario; however, it is also important to remember that measures previously put in place have not always worked. It is important to undertake science and evidence based policy changes. Scientic data about pollution sources and contribution will help in framing credible and implementable policies.
Developing a Clean Air Action Plan for Patna
CSTEP has developed a Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP) for the city of Patna. The plan has identified a set of implementable control measures that are technically and economically feasible, towards improving Patna's air quality, in consultation with policymakers and stakeholders.
The official report by CSTEP, containing complete details of CAAP, can be accessed by clicking on the Download Document button on the right.
A Methodology for Design of Solar Micro-Grid for Improved Energy Access
This project is supported by a grant given by the Good Energies Foundation, Switzerland. The project is related to renewable energy technology-based solutions for socio-economic transformation of a remote village. The study includes a pilot project implementation in the state of Odisha through collaboration with an implementation partner, Sun Moksha.
Techno-Economic Analysis of Stand-Alone Solar PV and Battery-Based Micro-Grids in Karnataka
This project was a part of the Indo-US collaborative research platform Solar Energy Research Institute for India and the United States (SERIIUS; www.seriius.org) and was funded by the WIPRO Foundation.
Mini-Grids
Energy access is a well-proven determinant in several development and transformative sectors, such as education, primary health, gender empowerment, and quality of life. In India, providing access to affordable electricity to every household has been a challenge, especially in remote rural areas. Both the central and state governments have accorded high priority to last-mile electrification, with one such instance being the Saubhagya scheme aiming for 100% household electrification.
Storage
CSTEP’s storage programme has two verticals: 1) techno-economic analysis of various storage systems along with policy aspects, and 2) research and development (R&D) of novel electrode and electrolyte materials for state-of-the-art and emerging battery systems using computer simulation techniques.
