We are seeking a Senior Associate to join the Adaptation and Risk Analysis team within the Climate, Environment and Sustainability sector. The role will focus on urban flood modelling to contribute to ongoing research on climate resilience in Indian cities.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and analyse spatial and temporal data on urban hydrology in select Indian cities, including rainfall patterns, drainage networks, and land use and land cover, using publicly available data (e.g. IMD, CWC and other gridded datasets).
  • Assess, develop, calibrate, and validate suitable hydrological models based on ground conditions.
  • Examine historical flood events and assess their impact on urban communities and ecosystems. Simulate flood scenarios under various climate change projections (e.g. RCP scenarios) to evaluate future flood risks.
  • Document methodologies, findings, and insights in a comprehensive report, including data analysis, model outcomes, and actionable recommendations for flood risk mitigation.
  • Training and capacity building of stakeholders on the application of flood modelling outputs.
  • Contribute to designing appropriate nature-based solutions (NbS) or ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) measures against flood risk.

Qualifications

Master’s degree or higher in climate science, hydrology, environmental engineering, urban planning, or related fields. Previous experience with urban flood modelling and GIS mapping is a must.

Skill Set

  • Hands-on experience in hydrological and flood modelling tools (e.g. HEC-RAS, SWMM, and MIKE FLOOD)
  • Familiarity with different climate datasets and climate data analysis
  • Well-versed in GIS-based spatial analysis (e.g. ArcGIS and QGIS)
  • Knowledge of Python/R for hydrological modelling
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to conduct field work in urban scenarios
