Urban Development

CSTEP’s research in the Urban Development domain strives to help cities become resilient in keeping with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We examine scalable and sustainable solutions for urban problems, through application of Urban Analytics. We help governments and stakeholders strategise solutions to challenges in urban planning and service delivery.  Our research focuses on:

• Resource efficiency: Encourage circular economy in ecosystem services for cities and ensure efficient use of resources.
• Social transformation: Ensure inclusive and equitable access to basic services in line with the Leave No One Behind agenda of the SDGs, with specific focus on gender integration.
• Data analytics and decision support: Solve challenges in urban planning and management and empower communities through geomatics, big and small data analyses, and innovative data visualisation.

Our key areas of intervention include urban governance, social infrastructure and water-sanitation-hygiene sectors. We engage with national, state and city governments, utilities and civil society organisations to deliver our research objectives.
