Science has laid the foundation for our understanding of the human experience. But for science to respond to our needs, it must be continually informed through public engagement and participation. This engagement will, in turn, help the public make informed choices to better the quality of their lives. In today’s context of ‘wicked problems’ aggravated by COVID-19 and the climate crisis, attacks on the credibility of science have demonstrably worsened the challenges. Quite understandably, it has become imperative for both governments and citizens to become scientifically literate and understand the language of science.

To help the society at large in this quest, CSTEP launched the 'Discussion Series on the Role of Science and Technology in Society' in March 2020. The series is aimed at making scientific solutions accessible to the general public in order to build a culture of rigorous scientific reasoning and facilitate the design of solutions that are backed by scientific insights. Effectively leveraging science and technology will strengthen the pillars for building an Atmanirbhar Bharat—a self-reliant India. Such an India will see improved quality of life for its nearly 1.4 billion citizens who account for almost 17% of the world’s total population.
